Chapter Four

Days passed, and Ralph forgot about the visitor. It was some lunatic, he told himself the next day. Some lunatic who wouldn’t follow through on the nonsense he’d spoken. After a while Ralph started to wonder even if he’d totally imagined the interaction—it seemed like the sort of thing that could happen to someone slipping up. He dismissed it and got back to his normal routine: struggling to survive, watching his back, dreaming of revenge on the people who had done him wrong—especially Tiffany.

Mail call came through, and the guard lobbed a package at Ralph, unconcerned about its contents. Ralph, having almost forgotten the meeting with the strangely foreboding man from days before, wondered what it was. He bit into the tape and managed to pull and tug and rip until it was open. Inside there was an envelope and a weird-looking antique. Ralph looked at it in puzzlement for a long moment. It didn’t look anything like a lamp; it looked more like a funeral urn, heavy with some kind of dark burnished metal, closed and sealed, with loops and whorls of a lighter metal in bands around the top and bottom. There was some kind of inscription—but it was in a language that Ralph couldn’t even imagine reading.

The envelope contained a long, cruel-looking needle—thicker than any syringe, and a slip of paper with a note. Hey bro, the note read, I remembered you wanted to have this from dad’s estate—no idea what you’d want it for since it’s a useless old antique, but whatever. It was signed with his brother’s name, but Ralph didn’t recognize the handwriting. He looked at the needle in confusion for a moment before the mysterious man’s instructions came back to him. Ralph shrugged. It was absolutely ridiculous, totally insane, but what else could he do? It wasn’t as though the prison had much in the way of entertainment. Ralph took the needle into one hand and pressed the point to his thumb, wincing as he pushed it into his skin. When he pulled the needle out, his blood obediently welled up onto his skin. Ralph picked up the urn-looking object and swiped his bloody finger against it, shaking his head at how ridiculous what he was doing was. Nothing happened—no plume of smoke, no shattering earthquake, nothing to indicate that anything had happened.

Ralph put the urn on the foot of his bunk, lying back and examining the needle that the man had sent with it. That at least might be handy—it was a minor miracle that the package had made it through inspection with it. Normally the guards removed anything sharp.

After a few moments, Ralph felt as though he was getting a headache; a low, buzzing hum filled his mind, shutting out all the other ambient noise on the block. It started out whisper-quiet and gradually grew in volume, a sound like a distant swarm of bees coming closer and closer. Ralph’s heart started beating faster. He was losing it, he thought. Really, truly losing it.
